Motion Computing is a market leader in Tablet
PCs which enable people to use computers in
amazing new ways and places. The company markets
custom built Tablet PCs directly through its
Web
site and through an experienced international
reseller network. The Motion management team
decided to use a business model they had previously
implemented at Dell:Customers can configure
and order customized Tablet PCs and accessories
to have them delivered right to their own door.
The choice of a strategic IT partner was a
crucial component in the success of the company,
if Motion had to operate this way with no inventory,
and with quick turn-around for online orders.
On-Site conducted a thorough Business Process
Analysis and interviewed across all departments
to gather business requirements and determine
various objectives. We focused on the critical
components of the business model such as establishing
pricing models, determining product bundling
needs, how the order management system would
work, and how to seamlessly integrate the technology
solution with business partners so information
could be automatically transmitted and received.
A core requirement was an e-commerce site that
would be seamlessly integrated with manufacturing,
logistics, peripherals, customer service and
warranty repair partners while maintaining
all customer-related information. The result
needed to be extremely sound and infinitely
expandable.
Following the Business Process Analysis, On-Site designed Motion Computing's e-commerce user
interface, which enables users to configure
a customized Tablet PC, select accessories,
purchase service coverage and more, and arrange
for delivery. On the back end, On-Site created
an order management system that captures customer
information and electronically distributes
it to the various partners as appropriate.
When a customer places an order for a Tablet
PC, the manufacturer is automatically notified
with the details of how the Tablet PC should
be configured and where the product should
be shipped. Simultaneously, warranty information
and accessories purchased by the customer are
automatically ordered from the appropriate
partners for delivery. Information on the Motion
Tablet PC, such as its serial number and FedEx
tracking number are automatically communicated
back to Motion and added to the customer's
profile. All of these occur with little to
no human interaction.
Finally, On-Site customized Microsoft Great
Plains software to fulfill the accounting needs
of the company, and integrated it into their
system, ensuring that the build-to-order operations
are efficient and profitable.
Motion's success:
From the launch, Motion Computing immediately
exceeded forecast website sales by more than
100%.
At the end of the first quarter in 2003,
with less than five months of sales, Motion
Computing exceeded their goal for units sold
over the web by almost 300%.
By leveraging the On-Site implemented technology,
the company operates in an extremely efficient
manner with a relatively small number of employees.
The sales department operates at a staffing
level which is at least 50% lower than a conventional
company, providing tremendous savings and enabling
Motion Computing to dramatically scale operations
at minimal cost for years to come.
Client testimony:
"We chose On-Site because its project
team truly understood the complexity of our
business model and demonstrated they could
design a solution that met our strategic goals." Rob
Repass, Vice President & Chief Financial
Officer
"It was imperative that we seamlessly
integrated our work with all our business
partners. On-Site
enabled us to do that. They worked closely
with Motion and our partners to determine the
technical requirements, and then customized
our EDI links to our partners' internal systems
or websites as appropriate. As a result, over
95% of our communication with partners is handled
electronically" Jerome Kearns, Vice
President of Operations
"When we were evaluating technology providers,
it was critical that we chose a company who
could design and implement a solution that
not only matched our needs, but could scale
rapidly as our business grew in size and scope.
On-Site Computer Solutions addressed our objectives
and delivered a solution that has easily scaled
to meet the needs of our growing business." Scott
Eckert, CEO
